Roman archaeology, Lucentum

Exhaustive study of a fragment of Roman bronze sculpture found in the excavations at Lucentum in 2005. It is a left hand holding a sword handle whose pommel is formed by two eagle heads, an iconographic motif hitherto unknown in the Roman world. It also has a ring on which is engraved the lituus or staff of the augurs. This is probably a sculpture of an emperor in military dress (thoracata) from the 1st century AD, which is around 2.20 m tall.
