Mas d'Is and the constructions with moats from the 6th to the 3rd millennium BC.
Since the 6th millennium BC, certain types of excavated structures of varying dimensions and morphology, commonly known as pits, have been documented throughout Europe. In the Iberian Peninsula, the development of field archaeology in the last two decades has led to a notable increase in this type of structures associated with settlements with silos and pits that usually occupy large areas. Their morphology and chronology are diverse; thus, although pits dating back to the 6th millennium BC have been discovered, it is not clear that they can be related to the classic Pit Enclosures that seem to be characteristic of the 4th and 3rd millennia BC. In this paper we intend to reflect on the chronology, variability and interpretation of these structures on the basis of the information provided by the finds made in the east of the Iberian Peninsula and, in particular, in the Serpis Valley area.
