Rediscovering the Castillet (Millares, Valencia). A new reading of the Islamic fortress next to the Júcar river based on the results of the first excavation campaign.
The first campaign of archaeological excavations carried out in the Islamic fortress of El Castillet (Millares, Valencia) in the summer of 2014 is presented. During the description of the work, the main structural novelties are highlighted, such as the documentation of a pentagonal tower, the enclosure of the perimeter wall of the fortress and the recovery of the remains of room structures in the parade ground. This has led to a reformulation of the functionality of the site, traditionally associated only with territorial control on the border drawn by the River Júcar between Cofrentes and Cullera, and opens the way to new interpretations that bring the castle closer to the sphere of fortified granaries.
