Funerary stele from the 11th century and the urban growth of Elche (Alicante)
Elche (Alicante, Spain) is located about two kilometres from the site of Illici, the ancient Iberian city. It is proposed here that the foundation of the Islamic town took place in the middle of the 8th century and that Egyptian settlers were involved in its relocation. Through the study of an epigraphic funerary piece and other Arabic sources, the following hypothesis is put forward
The town's development and the construction of its walls in the Taifa period until it became the capital of its own cora in the 12th century.
