The museum of Santa Pola (Alicante)
The Museum of the Sea, created in 1982, is an institution that presents the history, development and way of being and living of the population of Santa Pola, with the sea as the guiding thread of the museographic discourse. It is housed in the Castle-Fortress, built in the 16th century to defend the port. The archaeological and ethnographic collections make up the majority of its holdings. The museological model is linked to a recreational leisure offer, consisting above all in developing new ways of transmitting messages, always showing the objects in a dialectic relationship with their surroundings. Other relevant aspects are related to communication, conservation, security and human resources.
The didactic proposal aimed at schoolchildren and the cultural services and activities for all types of public are noteworthy. Research and the scientific programme are also one of the fundamental pillars of the centre.
