The archaeological site of Empúries. New proposals and approaches for the 21st century
On 23 March 2008, the first centenary of the institutional recovery of the archaeological site of Empúries (l'Escala, Girona) will be celebrated. From the first years of the excavations, Empúries was conceived as a site that could be visited and a monographic museum was built between 1914 and 1916. The interventions carried out during this period, under the direction of Josep Puig i Cadafalch, largely marked the presentation of the site throughout the 20th century.
of the archaeological site and the location of its cultural facilities. At present, Empúries is a seat of the Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya, an autonomous entity dependent on the Departament de Cultura i Mitjans de Comunicació de la Generalitat de Catalunya, and is carrying out a series of projects that will facilitate,
among other things, the adaptation of existing facilities to the needs of the more than 223,000 people who are currently living in the city.
The site has been visited annually and a greater understanding of the historical significance of the site has been achieved.
