THE TREASURE OF THE PENYA DE L'ÀGUILA
Gold
Montgó. Dénia
The treasure consists of three torques and a pendant made of an alloy consisting of a percentage of gold greater than 90%. The hammered torques are circular in cross-section and have a loop from which a bead is suspended in one case or, in the other two cases, two beads are suspended on either side of the loop. The pendant is a lotus flower from which two smaller pendants are suspended, decorated using the filigree technique and gold thread.
It is a concealment made inside one of the walls. This circumstance perhaps justifies the fact that the site is one of the last peninsular strongholds of Sertorius (80-73 BC) and that some event related to these wars led to the hiding place. The techniques used in the manufacture of the objects, hammering and filigree, however, date back to the 4th century BC (Aranegui 2015).
The treasure is deposited in the MARQ.
