SESTERTII TREASURE
Bronze
Dianium. Territorium
It seems that this set, made up of 668 sestertii and a dupondio, was part of a concealment inside a ceramic vessel of which nothing is known. Nor is there any information on the location of the find, somewhere between Dénia and Xàbia. The Provincial Council of Alicante bought the monetary deposit in 1992 and thanks to its good state of preservation 660 pieces could be catalogued, all of them minted between the governments of Vespasian (69-79) and Gordian III (238-244). Most of the sestertii belong to the 2nd century, specifically to the emperors Marcus Aurelius (200 pieces), Antoninus Pius (176) and Hadrian (119). As the most modern coin of the set belongs to Gordian III, its concealment must be dated to this chronology and can be related to moments of instability in the face of a civil war in the Empire.
