The Provincial Council will bring together experts from all over the world at MARQ to discuss archaeological heritage and Mediterranean wine culture

  • Representatives of historic wineries and appellations of origin will meet at this international congress from 29 to 31 October.

  • Juan de Dios Navarro recalls the enormous wealth of the province's wine-growing tradition and its place as one of the oldest wine-growing regions, ahead of Oporto and Tokaj.
  • "El Mar del Vino" has the collaboration of the Generalitat Valenciana, Alicante City Council, Vinos Alicante DOP and Casa Mediterráneo, which will offer an extensive programme of parallel activities with tastings and visits to wine sites.

The international seminar "The Sea of Wine, organised by the MARQ, will bring together next October in Alicante representatives of the wineries and the world's oldest appellations of origin to talk about the history of wine in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Deputy for Culture, Juan de Dios Navarroand the Councillor for Tourism of Alicante City Council, Ana PoquetThis morning, they presented the congress and the associated events, with the collaboration of the Regulatory Council of the Designation of Origin Alicante Winesthe Alicante City Council and the Generalitat Valenciana. "This is a conference of an extraordinary level that will turn the city of Alicante into the historical capital of Mediterranean wine and will allow us to take the pulse of this industry in the face of current challenges, as well as to share the history of the rich wine legacy that we treasure as a province and that forms part of our identity."said Navarro.

Coinciding with this year's celebration of the Gastronomic Capital of Alicanteand taking into account the importance that wine has had and continues to have in the history of the province, ".the purpose of this seminar is to recover that memory in order to face the future and put Alicante back on the world wine map"added the deputy, who recalled that ".Alicante is one of the oldest designations of origin in the world, ahead of regions such as Porto in Portugal, Tuscany in Italy or Tokaj in Hungary.".

For this reason, the province will play a leading role in the seminar, in which the foundations of its winemaking tradition will be presented with research projects in the field of wine. Alt de Benimàquia in Dénia or the l'Illeta dels Banyetsas well as the study of the pottery workshops at manufacture of wine amphorae (figlinae) which is being carried out by the University of Alicante. Also, as the director of MARQ explained, Manolo Olcinathere will be room for the history of the Fondillón, the world's oldest living wineand the meeting will conclude with a public presentation of the research carried out on "Alicante 1510". as the oldest designation of origin in the world.

Poquet, for his part, emphasised that ".this congress, which places Alicante on the world map of oenology, is part of the Tourist Board's strategy because it links two very important products, congress tourism and the gastronomic product, especially this year when we are the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy.".

From 29 to 31 October the conference will also include an extensive programme of activities at venues such as the Castle of Santa Bárbara, the Co-cathedral of San Nicolás or Casa Mediterráneoas detailed by Poquet. At these emblematic venues, tastings will be held with sommeliers of the stature of David Doñate o Sarah Jane Evanswine tours, a gala dinner with a menu designed by the chef Dani Frias or guided tours both to the permanent exhibition of MARQ and to the site of the Illeta dels Banyets.

The Sea of Wine" will feature 25 speakers with twenty lectures structured in four thematic blocks. The first will analyse the wine production in the Mediterranean throughout historythe second block will focus on the older winesThe third will focus on the latest and most important innovative research and the oldest names in the world will close the programme with representatives of the Port, Burgundy and Tokaj AOCs.

The presentation of this proposal was also attended by the director of Casa Mediterráneo, Andrés Perellóthe president of Vinos Alicante DOP, Jose Juan Reusthe congressional coordinator, José Luis Menéndezand the manager of Alicante DOP, Eladio Martín Aniorte.
