Farewell Rubí, good friend of MARQ

Rubí Sanz at MARQ in 2022

On the eve of Museum Day, Rubí Sanz Gamo, who dedicated her professional life to the management of these essential cultural institutions, has passed away. She has also left us a legacy of reflections and proposals written in specialised journals and conference papers. With a degree in Art History from the Complutense University of Madrid in 1974 and a PhD in History from the University of Alicante in 1996, she took over the management of the Museum of Albacete in 1983 until 2022, with an interval between 2004 and 2010 when she governed the National Archaeological Museum, when the first steps of its current renovation were taken. She was a member of the German Archaeological Institute, the Royal Academy of History and the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and was also Minister of Culture of the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha between 1999 and 2000. A specialist in Iberian and Roman archaeology, her research focused mainly on the lands of Albacete, where she also focused her efforts on the dignification of cultural heritage, as evidenced by her constant support for the recovery and museumisation of the Tolmo de Minateda site (Hellín). Rubí visited the MARQ on several occasions and took part in conferences and colloquiums organised here. His last participation was in the Jornadas Científicas Iberian Contestania Revisited (2022) in which he spoke on the Iberian cultures to the west of this pre-Roman region. This is attested to by the written paper, produced in the period of his advanced illness, which has remained in the published proceedings (2024). For this reason, we would like to thank him for his efforts, a demonstration of his affection and respect for our museum.

Rest in peace.
