The torso of the Warrior of Monforte del Cid (Alicante) and other fragments of sculptures found in the Iberian necropolis of Camino del Río. (2020)

By: Molina Mas, Francisco A.

The archaeological excavation of the Camino del Río site (Monforte del Cid, Alicante) has finally revealed the location of the Iberian-period necropolis to which the pillar-stele and the bull sculptures found in the early 1970s in El Arenero, 500 m to the west, belong. In addition, new sculptural fragments carved in limestone from the local quarry of El Ferriol were found there, including the torso of a warrior, a hand, a frieze with palmettes and several pieces of bulls. These sculptures and the grave goods found in the loculi date the necropolis to between the end of the 6th century and the last quarter of the 5th century BC.
