El Argar 1991 (2022)

The settlement of El Argar (Antas, Almería) has given its name to the most representative culture of the Bronze Age in the Iberian Peninsula. Since the excavations of the brothers Henri and Louis Siret and Cels in the eighties of the 19th century, when almost 1000 tombs were discovered, there had been no further intervention at the site until 1991, when the German Archaeological Institute of Madrid (DAI), under the direction of Hermanfrid Schubart (then head of the DAI), under the direction of Hermanfrid Schubart (then head of the DAI-Madrid) and the co-direction of Dirce Marzoli (at that time a scientific collaborator of the DAI Madrid), carried out a one-off archaeological excavation from 28 September to 9 November, with the support of the Exma. Alcaldía de Antas and the efficient collaboration of six neighbours of the same village, to whom this publication is dedicated. The main objective of the excavation was to investigate those sites which, thanks to a previous geomagnetic survey promoted by the DAI in 1987 and carried out by Helmut Becker, revealed important alterations and an abundant record of buildings. For this purpose, three cuts were opened on the El Argar plateau, located non-contiguously, but strategically positioned in order to also obtain an east-west profile covering the most extensive area across the width of the El Argar plateau.
