Hispania was organised into three imperial provinces: Lusitania, Baetica and Tarragona. Lucentum belonged administratively to the latter.
During the Roman Empire, the territory of the current province of Alicante was structured around four cities, the only ones to enjoy the legal urban recognition of Rome:

... the municipi d'època augustea, Lucentum (Alacant)...
... and two cities that would later obtain municipal status: Dianium (Denia), the Roman port of which is now at floodable levels...
... i Allon (la Vila Joiosa?), where the turriform funerary monument known as the Tower of Sant Josep still stands out.
