Coin of vuit escuts d'or encunyada en el regnat de Carles III en la seca de Mèxic. Tipus Calicó 15, no. 91.
The obverse bears the legend CAROL III D G-HISP-ET IND-R 1779 and the bust on the right of the monarch.
The reverse has the legend IND-UTROQ-FELIX-AUSPICE-DEO and the royal escutcheon and gold toisó. It has the mark of the seca de Mèxic (M surmounted by an O), the value sign 8 S (vuit escuts) and the mark of the assajadors (F.F.).
This coin is part of the Sant Joan de Alacant hoard, made up of 501 coins (15 escuts and 486 rals), minted between 1708 and 1823. The hoard was hidden until 1823 and its concealment is related to the absolutist repression suffered by the liberals of Alacant at the end of the Liberal Triennium.
