Royal Glass Factory
18th century
Got-cubilet of opal glass. Flat base, inverted truncated conical shape with rounded rim and rounded rim. La Granja glass. Floral enamelled decoration and golden fillet on the upper edge. Borbonic polychrome royal sculpture framed by two palm trees and three floral garlands on which is written in capital letters "VIVA EL REY CARLOS III" (LONG LIVE KING CARLOS III).
The Royal Glass Factory of La Granja was born under the auspices of the Crown in the time of Philip V and gave rise to a great glass industry, a faithful reflection of the greatness of the monarchy within the Enlightenment ideals and the mercantilist conception of the royal manufactures advocated in France. Masters of different nationalities arrived there, which contributed to the elegance, quality and exquisiteness of the pieces made in this factory, which competed with Bohemians, Venetians, French, English and Germans. The manufacture of this white, opaque glass, opaline, with iridescence reminiscent of opal, is obtained thanks to the lime phosphate added to the colourless composition resulting from the combustion of animal bones. It has been produced on the farm since 1751, but since then it has been one of La Granja's most successful products.
