VERGE DEL ROSER
Fons Històric MARQ
Carving on wood and polychromed on wood with a layer of escaiola (scaiola)
h: 94.5 cm; a: 30 cm; e: 23 cm
Late Gothic
First half of the 16th century
Carving on wood and polychromed on a full body, recovering an escaiola layer, which represents the image of Our Lady of the Rosary with a little boy standing. The piece does not retain the right arm and only part of the left hand on which it was to bear the attributes of its advocation: rosary, little Jesus and branch of flowers. It would also have worn a crown that has not been preserved.
The sculpture was originally located in the Chapel of the Roser in the church of the Assumption in the city of Dénia, located in the old town of the town, which was used as a burial place for the confreres until the beginning of the 19th century. The piece arrived in the city of Alacant in the 1930s, as a result of the rescue of cultural heritage carried out by members of the Provincial Monuments Commission in the years before the Civil War, and was deposited in the storage rooms of the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Alacant for safekeeping and protection. In the past, the image enjoyed great devotion and there are lights in her honour in some towns in the province.
