VAS CARDIAL
Cova de l'Or (Beniarrés)
Ceramics
h: 10 cm; w: 12.3 cm
Neolithic antic
VI-V milli-lenni BC
A small, globular ceramic vase with impressed cardial decoration. It has two diametrically opposed pressing elements on either side of the rim, consisting of two appendixes with vertical holes. The decoration is made up of parallel horizontal lines, obtained by impressing the edge of the cardium edule shell, which alternate with friezes made up of vertical and curved lines made in the same way as the previous ones, although in this case they are finished off with the impression of the apex of the shell.
These types of vessels with cardial decoration represent the first pottery to appear in our lands, associated with the new Neolithic production economy. The cardial decorative technique, loaded with cultural and chronological significance in the Mediterranean context - it is not exclusive to our sites - has become one of the defining and most representative elements, alongside other material elements, of the archaeological record of the first farmers and foragers who settled in our lands; So much so that the research plan speaks of "the horology of the impressed ceramics". The vessel that we are collecting here comes from the Cova de l'Or, an emblematic Neolithic site in the area of the Mediterranean façade of the Iberian Peninsula, the cave which witnessed the development of the first agricultural and farming communities in our area, and from which we have samples not only of ceramic materials but also of lithics, ossis, etc.
