SEEING AND TOUCHING

The Typhlological Museum was created by ONCE 25 years ago, firstly, as a service to its members, in response to specific concerns expressed by them on two levels: firstly, the need to access the aesthetic experience derived from universal works of art, which were only known through the written or verbal descriptions of other people and never through their own experience; and secondly, because the creators affiliated to the Institution demanded a space where they could exhibit their works and which would become a good showcase for their concerns.

The Typhlological Museum was created by ONCE 25 years ago, firstly, as a service to its members, responding to specific concerns expressed by them on two levels: on the one hand, the need to access the aesthetic experience derived from universal works of art, which were only known through the written or verbal descriptions of other people and never through personal experience; and secondly, because the creators affiliated to the Institution demanded a space where they could exhibit their works and which would become a good showcase for their concerns.

The result of both interests was the creation of a physical space that, by satisfying these demands, would be a point of integration with the rest of society. This last aspect also underlies the decision of the ONCE Culture Department to sponsor and manage the touring of a significant sample of pieces from each of the collections that form part of the Madrid Typhlological Museum's holdings: models of monuments, works by affiliated artists and typhlological material.

The MARQ has been working since its inauguration in 2002 to ensure that the contents of its permanent exhibition, the sites and monuments it manages and the temporary exhibitions it organises are accessible to all audiences. With this aim in mind, it has created collaboration networks with different associations and institutions at local, provincial and regional level, in favour of people with disabilities, at risk of social exclusion or with integration difficulties.

Amongst these collaborations, those maintained for years with the Zone Management and with the C.R.E. Espíritu Santo, of the ONCE of Alicante, stand out, providing us with constant advice and support when carrying out programmes and actions, which have allowed blind or visually impaired people to enjoy the Historical and Archaeological Heritage that the MARQ exhibits.
