THE TOWER OF MAÇANES
More information here
The history of the municipality of La Torre de les Maçanes is inextricably linked to its most singular monument. Located in the street of the castle and known through the ages under different names, the tower building continues to stand out in the urban profile of Torremanzanas.
Tower of Aledua (Llombai) / Tower of Godelleta. Detail of the entrance opening.
This is a medieval fortified complex built at the end of the Muslim period (12th-13th centuries) to protect the inhabitants of the farmstead of Iri, known by the Christian conquerors as Torre de Maçanes (1246).
Between 1380 and 1382, the building underwent major repairs by order of Queen Sibil-la de Fortià, wife of Peter IV of Aragon, the Ceremonious.
The tower, 10 metres on a side and about 15 metres high, was enclosed by a wall (cortig) of which the remains of the eastern wall are preserved. Inside the enclosure there were several outbuildings and probably a mosque.
In 1989 the Rovira family, owners of the tower since 1670, donated the building and its plot of land to the municipality. From 2006 to 2009, the Generalitat Valenciana began the valorisation of the tower with the rehabilitation and structural consolidation of the building.

In 2011 the Diputación de Alicante, with the collaboration of the Torre de les Maçanes/ Torremanzanas Town Council, completed the restoration of the monument, making it accessible to the public. These works of musealisation of the tower and its surroundings allow, on the one hand, to approach the documentary contents that are exhibited in the interior spaces and, on the other hand, to contemplate through an exterior route the recovered structures of the original fortification.
