Footprints on the door of the forum

In Roman footwear there were calcei, soleae and caligae.

The former were the shoes that were normally worn with the toga, but it was often the case that the national garment was worn with sandals (sandals).soleae) according to Cicero. In a provincial town like Lucentum the rule was probably most frequently skipped.

Sandals were the most common footwear, especially among the lower social classes. Their soles could be reinforced with nails, such as the caligaemilitary sandals. One or other type is the pair of soles shown in the MARQ, found in the necropolis of Albir, in Alfaz del Pí (the organic material disappeared but the nails that gave the shape of the sole were found).

The human footprints found next to the door of the forum of the Lucentum. One of them, however, with the big toe indicated may be a barefoot or sandal print on which the big toe is marked.
