The Provincial Government of Alicante, led by Alicante Archaeology Museum (MARQ), and with the participation of Alicante University and the support of Elche’s Archaeology and History Museum (MAHE), is carrying out a new research project to locate the remains of the lost Islamic town of al-‘Askar. This urban enclave was occupied during the 10th century, but its location has until now remained a mystery.

This new research project was begun by MARQ as part of its Programme of Archaeological Investigations. The team of archaeologists involved in this project is directed by the distinguished Hispanist and Emeritus Professor of the University of Lyon II (France), Pierre Guichard; the Professor of Medieval Archaeology at Alicante University, Sonia Gutiérrez Lloret and the medieval archaeologist at MARQ, Jose Luis Menéndez Fueyo.
