  CARDIAL IMPRESSED POT
Cova de l’Or (Beniarrés)

Pottery
h: 10 cm; w: 12.3 cm
Neolithic
Early Neolithic

Small globular shaped pot with impressed cardial decoration and two pierced suspension lugs near to the rim, on opposing sides of the pot. It is decorated with alternating friezes of parallel horizontal lines, impressed into the clay using the edge of a cardium edule shell, and short vertical lines made in the same way as above, however impressed using the point of the shell.

These cardial impressed pots are the first type of pottery to appear in the Alicante region and are associated with the new production economy of the Neolithic Age. Cardial decorated pottery has an important cultural and chronological significance in the Mediterranean region. Although, it is not exclusively found in this region, it has become one of the most defining and representative features of the archaeological record of the first farmers who settled in these lands, so much so that at an investigation level a “horizon of impressed pottery” is talked about. The pot displayed here, was found in la Cova de l’Or, an emblematic Neolithic site on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The cave witnessed the evolution of the first farmers in this region, and is where a very good collection of not just pottery, but also lithics and bones, amongst other objects, has been found.
