Summer workshops 2009

MARQ’s programme of temporary exhibitions is a great occasion for children to visit different collections from other museums; not only from the local Alicante province, but also from national and international museums. This year’s exhibition from the British Museum is no exception and it provides children with the opportunity to learn about other cultures through their remains.

In partnership with the British Museum, MARQ is exhibiting “The Body Beautiful. Art and Thought in Ancient Greece”, which brings together 125 great objects of Ancient Greece. This exhibition, along side MARQ’s own exhibition “Greek Traces in Iberian Contestania”, is dedicated to learning, through its illustration of the concept of beauty of this great civilisation, which is the origin of our own modern Western culture. Not only will the children have the opportunity to discover this incredible heritage but they will also begin to learn the key aspects behind Western thought.

The museum has therefore planned all its summer activities around this theme of Ancient Greece and all children are invited to come along and learn about the concept of “Beauty” and the origins of Western civilisation.

This year’s “Spend the summer in MARQ” activities are from 30th June until 28th August 2009; from Tuesdays to Fridays.

Times
Mornings: 11am to 2pm. 8 to 14 years
Evenings: 6pm to 9pm. 3 to 7 years

In the mornings various groups will be organised. Pre-booking is required.
Group 1 – 30th June to 3rd July
Group 2 – 7th July to 10th July
Group 3 – 14th July to 17th July
Group 4 – 21st to 24th July
Group 5 – 28th July to 31st July
Group 6 – 4th August – 7th August
Group 7 – 11th August – 14th August
Group 8 – 18th August – 21st August
Group 9 – 25th August – 28th August
On Fridays the activities will take place in MARQ’s archaeological parks.

ACTIVITIES

Everyday there will be animated visits to one of the Temporary Exhibition galleries using MARQ’s learning guides.

In the educational workshops the children will discover:

- The secret of Greek pottery
- How to make a sculpture
- The victorious athlete’s crown

Various games, just like those that children in Ancient Greece used to play, can be enjoyed, including Knuckle Bones and Kottabos.

MARQ’S OWN OLYMPIC GAMES will be held and the winner will be crowned with an OLYMPIC OLIVE CROWN

KNUCKLE BONES

One of the star activities of this summer is the “KNUCKLE BONES” DRAWING COMPETITION, in which the participants illustrate their creativity and imagination. They have to “reconstruct” one of the incomplete sculptures which is on display in MARQ’s galleries, imagining what would have been its original appearance. The sculpture is of two children playing a game of knucklebones.

There are two age groups:
- 8 to 10 years
- 11 to 14 years

The first prize for each age group is sponsored by The CAJAMURCIA bank.
The prizes are:

- a weekend in a hotel in La Manga, in the Mar Menor, for the winner and his/her family, and also:
- a trip to the Roman theatre in Cartagena for the winner’s class at school

All entries must be handed in from 30th June until 28th August 2009.
All entries should be handed into MARQ’s Education Room,
Plaza Doctor Gómez Ulla, S/N, 03013, Alicante.
All the artwork participating in the competition will be exhibited in MARQ.
The prize winners will be announced 15 days after the final day of entry to the competition.
The prizes will be awarded in MARQ’s Conference Hall
Children will have the opportunity to participate in a treasure hunt to find reproduction archaeological objects in the ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARKS. These objects illustrate the influence of the Greeks on the Alicante province, and afterwards the children will answer a series of questions relating to these objects.
All those who take part in MARQ’s summer activities will be given a special discus as a gift from CAJAMURCIA.
