Lecture by D. Xavier Aquilué Abadias

THE GREEK CITY OF EMPORION (AMPURIAS). 101 YEARS OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS

Dr Xavier Aquilué
Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya-Empúries

On 23rd March 1908 the official rediscovery of Ampurias began. Undertaken as part of the 19th century cultural movement, the work was carried out by the Junta de Museos de Barcelona (Council of Barcelona Museums), led by Josep Puig I Cadafalch with the political support of Enric Prat de la Riba. Investigations at Emporion have been on going since then. Founded in the mid 6th century BC by the Massolian Phocaeans, Emporion was the most western Greek city in the Mediterranean. This lecture will present the current state of research on the city as well as review the history of the archaeological works carried out on it. In addition the celebratory activities to mark 100 years of archaeological excavations carried out on the site (1908-2008) will be discussed and future projects for the site will be revealed.
